- Get reference: Select your citation style (APA, MLA, Harvard, etc.) and generate the citation to copy.
What is an ISBN?
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique commercial book identifier barcode. Prior to 2007, ISBNs were 10 digits long. Since January 2007, all assigned ISBNs are 13 digits long and always begin with EAN prefix 978 or 979. Each number represents a specific geographic region, language group, publisher imprint, and edition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Where can I find the ISBN on a book?
The ISBN is almost always printed on the back cover of a book, right above or next to the EAN barcode. You can also find it on the copyright page inside the book's first few pages.
Q. What if my ISBN search returns no results?
Some older, self-published, or highly niche textbooks may not exist in global digital cataloging APIs. If our system cannot find your ISBN, the edit form will open automatically. You can fill out the title, authors, publisher, and year manually to generate your citation.
